Well, it all depends on what you really want when it comes to a videocard.

A GB of ram can be bought for a very nice deal if you get one of the "package" setups. Here's a link to a great deal on Corsair RAM (Corsair and Kingston are concidered to be top of the line in terms of RAM):

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145440

As for that vid card? You got a few choices. For DOOM 3, you can run it smoothly on a 256 card. I'd recommend a Radeon 9800XT 256 with updated drives (which you can get from the website). You can jack EVERYTHING up and get smooth 60 frames (That is, everything but AA, which should be off on ALL systems anyways.) They're a bit harder to find than the newer cards, so you may be safe getting an X800 - one of ATI's newer models, linked below:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102543

In all, you should NOT pay more than $100 for a GB of ram, and you should NOT pay more than $400 for a card - you can get a top of the line card for under $400 if you hunt. And also, remember that you don't NEED a high end card to play the most demanding games, this ain't the same thing as consoles :3

i have no idea of your budget but for the budget minded the 6600GT (i have it about 125 on sale now) is still considered the best bang for the buck but the 6800 GT (less than 200 now) is dropping in price fast from pressure of the new 7800 series.

BEFORE you get anything check your manual or call the manufacturer customer service to see if your pc has AGP OR PCI EXPRESS (not pci standard) for the video as they will not exchange and your wrong purchase will be most likely wasted money.

I have a connect 3d x800gto that I unlocked 4 extra pipelines from and overclocked so it's currently pretty much the same as a x850xt pe. If you do the unlock its a great deal at under 200 bucks.

he doesnt know pcs so skip the unlocking (risky) and the overclocking (with the speed already there why void the warranty)

The one above is a good card, but if I were you I'd go for a 256MB card( 6600GT is also available in the 256MB version...its around $200).
You'll be needing that additional memory very soon in the future for games like Oblivion( and in the present, for F.E.A.R ).

Good point...however, if you are going to go up to 256Mb then you might as well move up a class. I would then go with a 6800GT or a X800XL, in a 256MB card then. You are not going to get the bounce out of the 6600 card with the extra memory.

Actual p0wnage depends on which flavor of 7800 (GT, GTX, 256MB or 512MB).

$1500 for 7800GTX w/ 512MB x2 SLI = ouch!

if I want to build a comp for around 1100-1400 dollars how much ram and how much should I pay for a vid card around. Thinking about the 7800 GT and 2 gigs of ram or is that a bit much?

I agree. I am a firm believer in Crucial's company. They back up their product and they are fairly priced. They also have a real nice site to make sure you are getting the correct ram chips for your system. Yes you can get it cheaper somewhere else...but then again you get what you pay for.
